Capacitors In A Ups System

Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems use many large electrolytic capacitors help to smooth, filter and store energy. Capacitors in an uninterruptible power use many large electrolytic capacitors help to smooth, filter and store energy. UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) capacitors are energy storage devices that provide backup power to critical systems in the event of a power outage. They are usually connected in parallel to the main power source and store energy in the form of an electric charge. During a power failure, the stored energy in the capacitors is used to supply power to the connected devices, ensuring an uninterrupted power supply. The capacitors used in UPS systems are typically high-quality, high-reliability components that are designed to operate in demanding environments.

UPS Capacitor Types:

Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) use capacitors as a key component to store and regulate electrical energy. The different types of capacitors used in UPS systems are:

  • AC input capacitors: form part of the UPS input filter and/or the power factor correction stage. These capacitors smooth out input transients and reduce harmonic distortion
  • AC output capacitors: form part of the UPS’s output filter. These connect to the critical load output, controlling the waveform of the UPS output voltage
  • DC capacitors: form part of the rectification system and energy storage, smoothing out any voltage fluctuations (also known as supply voltage filtering).

What's The Role Of Capacitors In a UPS System?

Capacitors play a crucial role in a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) system by helping to smooth, filter, and store energy, ensuring that the UPS can provide continuous power to connected devices during power outages or other disturbances.

In a UPS system, capacitors are used in several ways, including:

The primary use for DC capacitors in UPS applications is to smooth out fluctuations in voltage — a process also known as “supply voltage filtering.” When there is a deviation in the input voltage, these capacitors act as stabilizing agents, attenuating sudden spikes and bridging voltage gaps to ensure a consistent voltage output.

AC capacitors share many similarities with their direct current (DC) counterparts, including a finite expected lifespan, thereby warranting consideration as consumable components. AC capacitors are predominantly situated within the UPS in the input and output filter sections. Their key roles encompass the attenuation of input transients, the mitigation of harmonic distortion within the utility input to the UPS, and a crucial connection to the critical load output. This connection facilitates the modulation of the UPS output voltage waveform, ensuring its desired shape and stability.

Overall, capacitors play a critical role in ensuring that a UPS system can provide reliable and continuous power to connected devices in the event of a power outage.

How does an electrolytic capacitor age?

Capacitors are the UPS components most prone to failure. They age over time, with the electrolyte, paper, and foil inside degrading over time. The rate at which this happens depends on the operating temperature and ripple current. Capacitors can provide up to 10 years of service life under the most favorable operating conditions, according to the manufacturer's ratings. However, generally accepted industry best practice recommends proactive replacement of capacitors during their 4-8 year lifetime to reduce the risk of catastrophic failure.

How Does A Failing Capacitor Affect A UPS?

An internal fault can cause pressure to build up in the tank. The large electrolytic capacitor has a pressure relief valve on the top of the tank to release the pressure to avoid explosion. Once the valve is open it won't close back and the capacitor will dry out very quickly and become an open circuit. Filtering capabilities will suffer and more problems will arise with harmonics and electrical noise. In addition, the stored energy will be reduced or even damage the battery pack. A worst-case scenario of catastrophic capacitor failure would trigger the UPS to go into bypass mode, leaving critical loads unprotected.

How to reduce the risk of failure?

The most effective way to minimise the threat is by proactive replacement ahead of their rated service life as part of a UPS Overhaul.  Also, make sure the UPS meets the recommended ambient operating temperature and humidity levels, and keep the air filters clean so cooling air can flow freely.
